Sometimes in SEO we spend a lot of time looking for really complex reasons why a site isn’t ranking, why we’re not getting as much progress as we want to see.
And sometimes you just have to look at something and think, well, what’s the obvious weird thing here?
What’s the strange thing that doesn’t fit in and doesn’t look like anything else on this website? And then you have to figure out why.
The tricky thing is, sometimes there isn’t a why.
Sometimes things are just a bit weird. Then there are other times when if you forget to look for the obvious, you’re going to miss the obvious.
We worked on a website a few years ago that just would not rank. So we checked the obvious. It was a WordPress website, and we checked to see if it was allowed to rank.
In WordPress there’s a tick box in the settings that is labelled, ‘discourage search engines from indexing this website’. And the developers had left that checkbox in.
So remember, in SEO, don’t be afraid to look for the obvious.
